St. Michael’s International School Participation in Community Events
Toa Road Community Event
We were very honoured this year to be asked to take part in this annual
event that embraces the whole community. The weekend was very well attended
and visitors came from far and wide to listen to Jazz music and buy local
arts and crafts. St. Michael's hosted Vissel Kobe Football Club, where
children played football, meet the club mascot, bought items at the school
flee market and entered raffles to win football tickets to watch Vissel
play at Wing Stadium, their home ground.
Fureai Festival
Kobe Shogakko, our friendship school, has a long history of being a local
school with rich international background. The school is designated by the
Japanese government as a Research and Development School and Community
Centre for Internationalisation. They have been organizing their annual
Fureai Festival for 30 years now. " Fureai " is a Japanese word that means
‘warm exchange’. In the past years, this event has provided our school with
a rare opportunity to participate in their unique international education.
This year SMIS will be displaying artwork and introducing Christmas craft
ideas that relate to British traditions.
Kobe Children's Music Festival
St. Michael’s last participated in this event in 1996 as schools are
invited guests on a rotational basis. The event is not a competition but a
celebration of music from different schools in Kobe. As invited guests, the
SMIS choir will perform 2 songs this year.
The 6th Student Art Exhibition (2010)
By The Association of Foreign Schools in Hyogo Prefecture
St. Michael’s annually exhibits Art work at the exhibition, and in
previous years the work submitted has incorporated different ideas from a
wide range of themes and inspirational artists, past and present. The
exhibition provides the children of SMIS to showcase their creative and
imaginative talents, using a wide range of media, both in two and three
dimensional forms.
Foreign Schools Association (15th Anniversary Cultural Event)
The Foreign Schools Event is a gathering of schools and in 2010 is
celebrating its 15th anniversary. It is also a showing to the Municipal
government its thanks and support over these last 15 years. This event is
a coming together of its members as a show of unity and outreach
internationally. St. Michael's has been involved in the past in cultural
events organized by the association and in 2011 the SMIS School choir, Year
6 and 5 children will perform, alongside other schools.
Shoin Women's University (In partnership with SMIS)
St. Michael's International School have developed, in partnership with
Shoin Women's University, a professional development programme aimed at
providing Japanese students with teaching experience in an international
setting. Selected students from the universities English department will be
joining St. Michael's in November to carry out a three day teaching
practicum, for which they will receive a certificate from the school upon
successful completion of the programme. During their time at SMIS the
students will work in classrooms supporting children's learning and working
alongside the class teacher to implement and deliver the British
curriculum, with groups of children, under the direction of class teachers.
