ESOL
(English for Speakers of Other Languages) |
St. Michael’s is fortunate to have a very diverse student population. The number of students who are classified as ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) consists of approximately one third of the student population. There are at least twelve languages and twenty-three countries represented.
What is English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)?
The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme at St.Michael’s International School was established as a means of developing the capacity to speak, read, and write in English for children whose first language is not English. All instruction is conducted in English; therefore, ESOL is considered an immersion program.
Who decides that my son/daughter should join ESOL classes?
At the beginning of each term the class teacher and ESOL coordinator meet to discuss students. Regular evaluations help determine the exact level of instruction needed for each student.
How long will my child be an ESOL student?
Practically, if your child speaks a second or third language then your child is automatically classified as an ESOL student. Depending on how well the student participates in class he/she may need some ESOL support at some stage in his/her learning. The duration of a student’s participation in the program depends on the individual and can vary from one year to seven.
How is the ESOL program taught?
The ESOL program is taught by a qualified TEFL teacher and includes:
- “Push-in” lessons – In these lessons, the teacher works with the class teacher in the respective classroom and supports the ESOL students within the class setting.
- “Pull-out” lessons – In these lessons, the students meet with the ESOL teacher for a designated time each week in the specialty room. Lessons are scheduled so that there is a minimum disruption to the regular class core subjects.
Where are ESOl students from?
St. Michael’s ESOL students represent many different nations: Norway, France, India, Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines, China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
How can I request an Interpreter/Translator?
Parents who need an interpreter to help them to communicate to teachers or other school staff regarding their child's education can call the Administration Office at 078-3218885.
The ESOL Coordinator is fully committed to providing a warm, welcoming, confidence-building environment for every ESOL student at St. Michael’s International School.
