Early Years (Ages 3-5)

Early YearsOur Early Years Program consists of one Nursery Class and one Reception Class. Children are accepted into Nursery at the age of 3, provided that their birthday falls before September 1st in the year they wish to enter. Children wishing to enter Reception must be 4 by the same date. A highly experiences teacher, aided by a full time assistant(s) leads each class.

Work in both classes is structures so as to provide a continuum of skills acquisition and concept formation. Children have stories read to them regularly and are introduced to the alphabet and the reading and writing of easy words. The focus in the Nursery class is on learning to co-operate, and social and English language development. At Reception level, children are introduced to the school’s mathematics, phonics and reading programs in preparation for entering Year 1. A variety of reading and developmental language materials are use, along with videos and computer programs.

Basic calculations and the recognition and naming of colors and shapes are also taught using a variety of practical aids. Games acting out short stories, rhythmic exercise and action songs help the children to learn to follow instructions and co-operate with others. Art work, using crayons, paint, scissors, paper, paste, clay, etc. develops imagination and manual skills. Nature study, nursery rhymes and stories build up vocabulary and increase attention span.

An important objective of the Early Years Program is to help children to learn to enjoy working and playing with each others, and also to be able to work independently as and when appropriate. All children visit the Library regularly and parents are also encouraged to help the children choose books. Both Music and P.E. are taught at weekly by a specialist teacher in both classes, and the Reception class also enjoys a weekly ICT lesson by a specialist teacher. Students utilize the cafeteria, and a full-time doctor overseas the medical services for all students.
