Writing Skills

Report Heading

Description

Word level

Is the child’s spelling accurate and do they use a wide variety of vocabulary?

Sentence Level

How accurate is the punctuation and grammar. Is the child able to start sentences using a variety of ways or restructure sentences to make a text read better.

Text Level

How enjoyable is the piece of writing when read. Is the story structured well and does it make sense, or in non-fiction, has the correct layout been used.

 

Reading Skills:

Report Heading

Description

Recognition of phonic knowledge and HFW

· How strong is the child’s ability to sound out words using the phonemes that have been learnt?

· How many of the high frequency words can be recognised by sight?

Use a range of strategies including accurate decoding of text, to read for meaning

· Can the child read accurately?

· Do they have the skills to work out unfamiliar words?

Describe, select or retrieve information, events or ideas from texts

· Can the child answer what, when, who questions?

· Can they answer questions that involved taking something straight from the text?

Understand and make deductions from texts

· Can the child answer why questions?

· Can they work out why something might happen even if it does not say so in the story?

Identify and comment on the structure of the text

· Can the child talk about how a text is set out?

For example, why are have bullet points been used? Why has the word been written in bold?

Explain and comment on writers' use of language

· Can the child talk about why an author has written a sentence in a certain way?

For example, why have they described a train as being like a bullet?

Identify and comment on writer’s purpose and viewpoint

· Can the child talk about why an author has written a text in a certain way?

For example, what are they trying to persuade the reader to do? Why have they written this text?

Counting, Partitioning and Calculating

· Understanding place value (1s, 10s, 100s)

· Ordering numbers

· Counting on and back

· Addition and subtraction

Block B

Securing number facts and Understanding shape

· Number facts particularly number bonds, multiplication and division facts

· Written methods of multiplication and division

· Basic facts associated with shape such as names, lines of symmetry and angles

Block C

Handling Data and Measures

· Understanding and producing graphs and charts

· Practical measuring of length, volume, weight, time etc.

Block D

Calculating, Measuring and Understanding Shape

· General problem solving involving the skills gain from units A to C

· For example, measuring differences is time, calculating cost, moving shapes to different coordinates, finding a perimeter etc.

Block E

Securing Number Facts, Relationships and Calculating

· Extension work of the content of Block A e.g.number bonds, multiplication facts

· Extension work on the four operations

· Extension work on number facts in developing an understanding on numbers below 1

How well has the child understood the area that has been studied?

For example:

· That different teeth have different jobs

· That different animal adapt to different environments

· That the heart pumps blood.

Scientific

Enquiry Skills

How well can the child:

· Ask questions and plan a fair investigation to answer them.

· Carry out an investigation accurately

· Record what they found out

· Make conclusions from a table of findings

· Evaluate their investigation.
